Athletes and Chiropractic Care
Whether you are a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, chiropractic care can help you to not only heal from injuries faster, but also to improve your performance on the field.
There are two types of athletes who come into a chiropractic office. The first is the recent or “acute” trauma, which includes injuries in a game or practice. The second is for relatively small or “micro” traumas, such as the constant motion of throwing a baseball, swinging a golf club, or swinging a tennis racquet.
One of the major problems in our society is that we have been conditioned to believe that the way to get someone better from an injury is to treat their symptoms. The problem with that thought process is too many times the underlying cause is never treated. We see it all the time in professional athletics: a star player comes back from an injury, pain free, then goes out the next day and gets a season, or even career, ending injury because the body never healed and the symptoms were only covered up. Only 8-12 percent of the nerves in the body can sense pain. Basing your health on symptoms does not work. We should be basing our health on how we are functioning, not on how we are feeling.
At True Vine Chiropractic, we get to the cause of the injury. We do this by looking at the structure of the spine, because we know that structure dictates function. The spine protects the spinal cord and spinal nerves, which send messages from the brain to the body, and from the body back up the brain. If the bones in the spine misalign (what we call a “subluxation”), the message from the brain will be blocked and the body will start to function at a lower level, leaving the body more susceptible to injuries if left uncorrected.
Our goal for all of our athletes is to get their body functioning at their best. This will cause the body heal faster while also performing better. A study done by the New Zealand School of Chiropractic found that athletes under chiropractic care have 14.8% faster reflexes! (Kelly DD, Murphy BA, Backhouse DP, J Manipulative Physiologic Therapeutics 2000 May; 23(4):246-51. Use of a mental rotation reaction time to measure the effects of upper-cervical adjustments on reaction time.) Who wouldn’t want that? This is just one of the many benefits of being under specific scientific chiropractic care. Don’t wait for an injury to arise before getting checked, make an appointment today to see how we can help.
